Cheddar Apple Sage Biscuits

Have you ever tried apple and cheddar cheese together? 🍎🧀Sounds like an unlikely combo but it's one of my favorites, especially these Cheddar Apple Sage Biscuits! You get a little sweet, a little salty, all the tastebuds are happy. Honestly, try your apple pie a slice of cheddar on top. It's weirdly delicious! I baked these cheddar apple biscuits up with a hint of sage. This would make awesome make-ahead rolls for Thanksgiving, giving them something new to talk about, or it could just be an awesome breakfast pastry. It's not sweet, just the perfect balance, which is what I love. Also kinda reminds me of those cheddar biscuits from red lobster... but different. lol!

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

2 teaspoons sugar

1 teaspoon kosher salt

1 teaspoon mustard powder (or sub with 1 tablespoon dijon mustard)

1 stick or 8 tablespoons unsalted butter, grated

1 cup chopped honeycrisp apples

1 cup cheddar cheese, grated

1 tablespoon fresh sage, minced

2 eggs

1/3 cup milk

  1. Grate one stick of butter and stick it in the freezer. Prep your apples and cheese and set them aside.

  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, mustard powder, sugar, and kosher salt. Whisk and set aside.

  3. In a measuring cup, add milk and 2 eggs. Whisk until well combined.

  4. Take the butter and with your hands, crumble it into the flour. You want it all covered with flour and crumbly like pea size pieces. Next, add the cheddar cheese, apples, and sage. Mix well.

  5. Pour in the egg and milk mixture and mix again.

  6. Now on a well-floured surface, transfer the dough and dust it with more flour so it's less sticky. Shape it into a square and cut it into 6 - 9 pieces, depending on how big you want the biscuits. Brush with heavy cream or an egg wash on top and put in the fridge for about 30 minutes to firm up / get cold.

  7. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Once ready to bake, put it into the oven and bake for 20-22 minutes until golden brown. Let it cool and enjoy!
